Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O), widely used in construction, agriculture, and industrial applications. Known for its versatility, gypsum is the main raw material for cement, plaster, and drywall (plasterboard) production, making it an essential component of the building and manufacturing industries.
Pakistan exports gypsum primarily to India, Bangladesh, and Middle Eastern countries, both in raw and processed form. The demand for gypsum continues to grow due to rapid infrastructure development and increased cement production. Investment in modern extraction and processing facilities could enhance the country’s export potential and value addition.

Gypsum Deposits in Pakistan

Pakistan has abundant gypsum reserves, estimated at over 500 million tons, distributed across several regions:

  • Kohat and Dera Ismail Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa): Major producers of high-quality gypsum.

  • Sibi and Loralai (Balochistan): Rich deposits supporting local and export industries.

  • Suleman Range and Salt Range (Punjab): Contain easily accessible gypsum of industrial grade.

  • Sindh (Thar and Karachi areas): Smaller deposits used mainly for cement production.
